Portrait Photography

This is my favourite portrait because the model is extremely close to my heart and it captures him in one of his "Experimenting for the first time in style" moments. (It is his first time with sun-glasses his size.)

That is the thing about portraits and though it has flat on-camera flighting, confusing specular highlights, busy background but I could not have missed this moment to set up lighting. Now that is not normally true of portraits as you can control the lighting, the background and get the model to pose.

Still Portrait work is very demanding and tests the skills of the photographer to the maximum. Creating the mood, analyzing the subject's facial features, deciding the lighting, deciding which pose works best and ensuring the ambience reflects the mood are a must for a good portrait. Most often the camera captures a very harsh photograph and while for most jonre I make the picture with the camera. A portrait most often deserves post processing in equal measure.

The most important aspect of a portrait is lighting to bring out facial features. As we our perception of a person is based on the shadow and highlights that light creates an expert photographer can manipulate light to make a thin person look normal and vice-versa. Skillful lighting can hide flaws and dramatize the appearance of a person.
Here are some portraits that I took in renowned Portrait photographer Dr. Prem Muthu's workshop.
